Values-based banks are genuinely authentic by being intentional in what they do and integrating values in their business
Tree planting, environmental protection & awareness
Environmental awareness – they are only big words when people say them without understanding the philosophy behind them. Finca DRC sets itself as an influencer of environmental management practices that truly manifest a harmonic balance between the economic activities of humankind and nature. Driven by its authentic understanding of nature – “a provider of well-being through its favourable climate, the fruits of its trees and many other benefits”, they endeavour to protect the ecosystem and raise awareness through their ethical practice.
Last year, the bank made 10 further commitments to follow the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Global Compact network – advocated by the United Nations, enabling businesses to achieve the SDGs on the ground through policy dialogue, national implementation strategies and partnership building. One principle being “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”. As far as actualization is concerned, the bank has since then been using biodegradable carriers instead of plastic bags. Small things count. And Finca DRC sincerely wants to demonstrate that we can all start by taking baby steps.
Furthermore, cooperating with the Institut Bobokoli, a local school in the capital city Kinshasa, the bank has expanded a 3-years program focused on reforestation, aiming at planting 1 million trees in the future. As of 2022, 40,000 saplings have been planted in the soil.
Mirela Pekmezi, Deputy CEO of Finca DRC says: “As a result, the impact of this action has raised people’s awareness of environmental education, including its staff and other microfinance institutions, which have understood the importance of promoting the harmony to maintain and characterize the relationship between the inhabitants of the Earth and nature.”
